    History


    In March 2007, NOBO, an education research institution, was founded in New York by Xia Qing, who holds a doctorate in Education from Teachers College of Columbia University, with the assistance of Dr. Robert Siegler, American psychologist, tenured professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and Academician from the National Academy of Education. The main goal of the institute is to research and compare the characteristics of and developments in current global preschool education theories and systems, as well as the key factors affecting the development of children’s cognition and learning in the U.S. and China’s basic education systems, as well as to work on NOBO’s own education system’s R&D based on the crucial habit.


    In the spring of 2011, to promote NOBO’s education research activity, Dr. Xia Qing introduced the NOBO Educational Approach to China, set up the NOBO Columbia Corporation, and invited Professor Robert Siegler to Beijing Normal University, establishing BNU’s Siegler Center for Innovative Learning (SCIL). SCIL is the first research institution named for and directly managed by a foreign scholar in China. Since then, NOBO Education research achievements have been widely used and promoted against the background of China, with the guidance of the NOBO R&D team and the assistance of the BNU Kindergarten and BNU Institute of Preschool Education.

    Philosophy of Education


    NOBO’s education mission is to “Make excellence your legacy, optimize your life, and change a generation.” We think, first of all, that educators should avoid trying for fast results, because education is an area that requires sincerity and deep understanding and should consider social value the primary goal. Second, quality education should not be enjoyed by only a few, and should endeavor to reach many families and to help children to grow up well and have the opportunity of an equitable education. To achieve these missions, NOBO Education seeks to answer three questions: Education goal: What kind of people do we want to cultivate? Education objective: Who is to educate the students? Education implementation: What measures do we need implement to ensure that our education goal can be achieved?


    1. NOBO Education goal

    The principle of NOBO Education holds that the ultimate goal of education is neither the taking of tests nor the quick mastery of skills. Rather, it must be to develop in an individual self-awareness, self-realization, and the ability to develop in harmony with his/her society. If we are to achieve this, our children must be cultivated so as to become lifelong learners who are civically minded and world-aware. To be lifelong learners, children need to gain respect, have the freedom to choose within a given structure, and to follow their own interests in exploring the unknown. Teachers and parents need to observe, guide, discover and capture children’s interest, be aware of their advantages and disadvantages, and then offer guidance and provide individualized support by using appropriate education resources and methods.


    2. NOBO Education objective

    NOBO’s education objective comprises two targets: school and family. On the one hand, the school is the professional body for the implementation of education, and teachers are important to children’s learning life. School administrators and teachers must apply educational concepts and methods that conform with the laws of education, so students can be scientifically, systematically, and suitably raised, and grow up happily and healthily. Therefore, we hope the NOBO Education idea will affect school teachers and administrators as much as possible. On the other hand, the family is the main force in the implementation of education, the first “school” underpinning children’s growth. Without the participation of the parent, the effect of a school education may be zero. So family is key to NOBO’s education concept, and it is a must.


    3. NOBO Education implementation

    Based on the NOBO Education philosophy, NOBO Education takes schools and parents as the main tools and aims to realize the spread of quality education in the following ways:


    1) Research and development – NOBO Education begins with R&D and from there continuously maximizes investment in front-line teaching R&D as well as in being at the forefront of brain and cognitive research.


    2) Method – NOBO will transfer its education concepts to an education system that can wield the most influence, through continuing to import education ideas from regional systems and through government cooperation.


    3) The family – NOBO’s emphasis is on education designs, like the Online To Offline (O2O) system, that conform with NOBO’s education ideas for family and community involvement, so as to assist in schools uniformly integrating family, education, views and actions.


    4) The teachers – NOBO is working to develop an education ecological system and to help more teachers master the latest concepts in education and infield operating methods, to result in the quick and accurate provision of good education.


    5) Science and technology – NOBO will use technology to enrich and perfect the NOBO Education Approach content, and present the results to teachers and children in a simple and efficient form so as to benefit them.


    In a word, through its own clearly defined concepts of education and high-efficiency transmission, NOBO’s education approach hopes to shape a new generation of Chinese so they have clear ideas about their pursuits, clear beliefs, and a spirit of exploration, a generation who can be confident of their ability to express themselves and who can realize a sense of self-worth. NOBO is convinced that this new generation of Chinese will be of strong character and make great contributions to the development of human civilization.

    In this era of informatization, digitization, and artificial intelligence, education is being changed by science and technology at an unprecedented rate and in unprecedented ways. In the course of this revolution, many are acting from different points of view and from different ways of thinking. Represented by Coursera, MOOC technology promotes a world-class curriculum and makes high-quality free education accessible to people around the world through the establishment of a network learning platform. The teachers’ and students’ online interactive platform can not only help students find suitable teachers but also improve teachers’ personal income. In the form of O2O, the vertical skills training platform helps students master a technology better and faster, and they can then find better paying jobs. Children learning application software develops many educational games, helps children train in a number of skills including foreign language skills and enhances their level of logical thinking.     Personalized Education


    Personalized education can be traced as far back as two thousand-plus years, when Confucius proposed “Teaching students according to different dispositions, ensuring that everybody obtains an education regardless of background.” Education should differ from student to student, so schools, teachers, and parents should offer targeted education based on each student’s talent, disposition, learning style, individual development potential, and interests, and provide the best guidance suitable for each child regardless of level.


    The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the authority on preschool education, has since 1986 strongly advocated for the individual appropriateness of education in the principle of Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP), which can be regarded as a confirmation and strengthening of the idea of individualized education.


    NOBO strongly agrees with the idea of DAP and recognizes the significance of individualized education. NOBO’s approach is that every child is a unique individual with a unique model of development and development process, so school and teacher should provide children with “individually appropriate” learning environments, game activities and interactions to promote the benign development of the individual. To achieve this goal, we should have accurate and clear observations of and thinking about every child. However, given the realistic situation of a shortage of preschool education resources, the low ratio of teachers to students, and heavy teacher workloads, personalized education is really hard to implement.


    It is NOBO’s position that it is possible to realize the peronalized education ideal by harnessing the power of science and technology. The American K-12 education institution AltSchool has helped teachers develop personalized education programs and this led ultimately to a teaching program of personalized education delivered with the aid of customized education hardware and software. Just like AltSchool, NOBO – through designing education products that have proved to be effective in scientific research – is working with authoritative scholars and institutions doing research on the brain and in cognitive psychology at home and abroad, with the purpose of providing schools and families feedback and an intervention plan for every child, in various areas including cognitive and social skills evaluation, and so helping teachers and parents better understand the individual differences between children and then laying a solid foundation for providing personalized education in different learning environments.
